Mental illness often leaves those afflicted feeling isolated, misunderstood and alone. The state-funded NYC Mural Arts Project aims to foster open dialogue and education about mental illness through community events, workshops and the creation of murals across New York City. Bringing local leaders and community-based organizations together, NYCMAP embarks on a nine-month creative process. At every step of the way, local community members are able to assist in the creation of a mural that represents all voices. This welcoming group atmosphere coupled with the wide variety of mental health resources offered allows NYCMAP to dispel negative stigmas about mental illness with every mural.
