About the artwork
This is not Mona Lisa in the desert, but an homage to Maria Bonita, the lover of Lampião, the leader of the group of cangaceiros (bandits) from Pernambuco (Brazil), by Brazilian street artist OZI. Maria Bonita joined Lampião and his group when she was in her 20s to live an adventurous life. Together, they conquered the area with love and bullets, and brought justice and rewards. Maria Bonita was a feminist - she demanded respect from her famous lover and from his group. How many women in the 1930s could abandon everything to follow a great love? Their story is a collective fiction told by so many artists and common people who ventured to tell the truth. Their saga continues being told and it still stirs popular imagination. OZI pictures Maria Bonita in the guise of Mona Lisa, capturing the mystery and the enigmatic essence of this heroic woman who fought against governmental and social injustice.

OZI began his street art career in 1985, supported and influenced by two great artists who started the graffiti scene in São Paulo, Alex Vallauri and Maurício Villaça. At the beginning, graffiti art was considered an act of political defiance by some and an act of defacing public property by others. As time has passed, however, the art of OZI and his fellow artists has become to be viewed as a valuable and respected type of expression. Since he began working OZI has created numerous works on the walls in the city, making him a member of the first generation of graffiti artists in Brazil. His work has been shown at galleries, museums and cultural centers as well as outdoor areas in Brazil and abroad.
